Use this lesson plan to teach your students about basic survival skills. A text lesson explains what they can do if lost in the wilderness and students make a plan to keep themselves safe.

Warm-Up

  • Tell students a story about a time you found yourself separated from the group you were with, either as an adult or (preferably) as a child. Ask:
    • Have you ever been separated from your group or parents?
  • Allow students to write about their experience for five minutes, then share with a partner.
  • Discuss:
    • What did you do to keep yourself safe?
    • How did you know to do these things?
