Warm Up and Preparation

  • Start the lesson by asking students if they've heard of Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
  • Now play a sample of his music, such as a piece from Disney's Maleficent or Sleeping Beauty.
  • Tell students this music is from the composer Tchaikovsky and ask who is familiar with the work.
  • Play the piece again, this time telling students to jot down notes about the music, such as what they hear and feel.
  • Divide students into partners and allow them to share their notes, then discuss as a whole class.
  • Prepare students for notes by having them make a small circle in the middle of their notebooks and write Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky inside.
  • Tell students to take notes using a web format as they read the lesson. Demonstrate this technique if necessary.
