Headed to a teacher job fair? Before you go, read this lesson to learn what potential employers will be looking for and what you can do to stand out in a crowd.

What are Teacher Job Fairs?

Across the country, educators host job fairs to recruit employees. But what are these job fairs, and what happens there? No, job fairs don't have any rides or food on a stick. They do, however, have booths or booth-like stations you can visit to speak with representatives from varying local schools about potential employment.

Typically, teacher job fairs are hosted by a university or job employment agency and are meant to be a meeting place for those looking for a job in education and those looking for educators to fill vacancies. They may run the course of the work day, from 9:00am - 4:00pm, or may focus on morning or afternoon hours only. Check before you go for specific times, place, and parking.

Also, before you go, you'll need to know what to expect and how to make sure you make a solid impression. What should you wear, who should you talk to, and when should you expect to land a job? Great questions - let's take a look at some specifics.

Before You Go

First, know that you will likely be interviewed by several schools or districts at the job fair. Treat this opportunity as you would a 'real' interview - prepare for them in the same way. You can do this by:

  • Identifying the schools or districts that will be represented at the job fair
  • Researching those schools or districts
  • Preparing statements and questions specific to these schools or districts

Before you go, find out who will be represented at the job fair. Identify a few schools you're interested in working for and make a list. You can also go ahead and print out the list provided by the job fair - it may contain an accompanying map, making navigating easier - and highlight the places you want to hit.
