Are you looking for fun and engaging activities that teach your students about butterflies? This lesson will provide you with hands-on craft activities as well as vocabulary strategies to use with students at various grade levels.

Teaching Butterflies to Your Students

Have you ever seen a child light up when they see a butterfly? They get so excited to see them fly by with all their beautiful colors. These activities can be used to teach students how butterflies evolve into these majestic insects they admire so much! The lesson begins with simple activities for younger students and works up to more complex tasks for older students.

Hands-On Activities

Coloring Pages

Coloring pages can be used to teach students the different parts of a butterfly while also allowing them to be creative. Start with a sheet that has the parts pre-labeled (legs, antenna, eyes, head, wings, and abdomen). Next, have students label a blank diagram themselves, you can use a word bank if necessary.

You can increase academic demands by adding a cross-curricular dimension to this activity. One idea is to add in number recognition and following multi-step instructions, by using a color guide. Place numbers on different body parts of the coloring page and have students follow the code provided. For example to identify odd and even numbers: 1-Blue, 3-Red, 5-Purple, 7-Green, 9-Yellow, and 2, 4, 6, 8- Black.

Egg Carton Caterpillars

For this hands-on activity you will need a foam egg carton (one for every two students), permanent markers, scissors, stick on eyes, and pipe cleaners.
