As teachers in today's society, we have to meet the needs of diverse learners. This lesson will help you understand strategies for teaching reading and writing to a wide range of students.

Diversity in the Literacy Classroom

Mr. Swados has been teaching fourth grade for five years, and one thing he has learned over time is there is simply no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching any subject matter. Reading and writing, in particular, call for awareness of and sensitivity to diversity in the classroom. Diversity, in this case, refers to human difference. Mr. Swados's class is racially and ethnically diverse. He teaches students from a variety of religious and socioeconomic backgrounds, and his students have diverse abilities, interests and needs. He has noticed that different students approach language and literacy differently because of their diverse backgrounds and prior experiences. In this lesson, he will share some of his best strategies for meeting diverse learners' needs.
