Termites Lesson Plan

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

This lesson plan will help you teach your students about various types of termites. Students will learn about the roles various termites fulfill to keep their colonies strong.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson students will be able to:

  • Differentiate between types of termites
  • Explain the roles that termites play within the colony
  • Describe the benefits and detriments of termites in an ecosystem


This lesson will take approximately 45-90 minutes.

  • Activate prior knowledge by asking students what they already know about termites. Write their answers on the board.
  • Read the lesson What are Termites? - Types & Characteristics as a class.
  • Pause after reading the ''Termite Characteristics'' section.
  • Divide class into small groups and provide each group with chart paper and markers.
  • Have each group create a concept map by putting the word ''colony'' in the center and creating stems that describe the roles within the colony. Include the following: false workers, soldiers, swarmers, workers, king, and queen.
  • Finish reading the lesson.
  • Have students create and complete the following chart to differentiate between the types of termites:
