Texas Native Americans Lesson Plan

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

This lesson plan will help your students learn about Native American tribes from Texas. Students will read a text lesson and take a quiz about what they have learned. They will further study the Comanche, Kiowa, or Apache in small groups.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • compare Native American tribes in Texas
  • describe the history of Native American tribes in Texas
  • summarize the European influence on Native American tribes in Texas

Length

This lesson will take 45-90 minutes.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.2

Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.4

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.7

Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.

Materials Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Small pictures of things pertaining to the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache tribes
  • Glue sticks
  • Colored pencils

Vocabulary

  • nomadic
  • reservations
  • hierarchial

Instructions

Activate prior knowledge by creating a 3-column chart labeled: Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache. Have students duplicate the chart in their notes. Divide students into small groups to list everything they know about these tribes. Have groups share their answers with the class.

Read the text lesson Texas Native Americans: History & Culture as a class. Pause after reading the ''Texas Native Tribes'' and ''The Comanche'' sections.

Have students add what they learned from their reading about the Comanche to their chart.

Create a concept chart on chart paper that is labeled 'Comanche.' Create stems that are labeled: Animals, Location, Economy, Culture, and Enemies. With students, fill out the concept map and discuss key details. Have students add important information to their notes.

Continue reading ''The Kiowa'' and ''The Apache'' sections of the lesson with the class. Allow students time to add new information about these two tribes to their notes.
