These discussion questions based on 'The Almost Sisters' by Joshilyn Jackson will challenge students' critical thinking skills and confirm what they have read in the book.

Almost Sisters

The following discussion questions will demonstrate students' understanding of the storyline while increasing their critical thinking skills.

Chapters 1 - 6

  • How would you describe Leia? Use at least five adjectives. Are there any similarities between Leia and one of your family members or friends? If so, explain. If not, choose a character in a movie or book that is similar to Leia.
  • Who is Digby and how was he conceived? How does Leia handle the news of impending motherhood? Do you think Leia and her partner were irresponsible the night they met? Explain.
  • Describe Leia's relationship with her sister Rachael. Do you think they exude sisterly love? Why or why not?
  • Define protagonist and use specific lines from the story to identify how Rachael is a protagonist.
  • Who are Birchie and Wattie? How does their age influence how you view them as you read the storyline?

Chapters 7 - 12

  • The author integrates literary devices throughout the story. How does she use imagery to convey good and evil?
  • How is Leia's point of view questioned in these chapters? How are we reminded that we are viewing the world through her perspective? Use specific lines from the story to support your response.
  • Leia's life situations are characterized by a character in her comic book. Explain.
  • If you were a counselor, what advice would you give Leia? Why?

Chapters 13 - 18

  • Explain how Leia views parenthood. Do you agree with her viewpoint? If so, why? If not, discuss your opinion.
  • Define allusion from a literary device perspective and address how the Second South is portrayed through allusions.
  • Describe the scene when Batman and Jake arrive. What role do fathers play in the storyline?
  • Discuss how Rachael and Leia's relationship has changed.
