The Battle of Bull Run Lesson Plan

What was the first major battle in the American Civil War? This lesson plan uses two video lessons to present a comprehensive look at the First Battle of Bull Run for students. A mapping activity highlights both sides of the conflict.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • list the events that led up to the First Battle of Bull Run
  • summarize the conflict and outcome of the First Battle of Bull Run
  • discuss the strategies employed by Union and Confederate troops during the First Battle of Bull Run

1 to 1.5 hours

Materials

  • A worksheet created using the Bull Run quiz and the summary quiz from the associated video lessons
  • Photocopies of blank maps illustrating the regions involved in the First Battle of Bull Run
  • Blue and gray markers
