Completing strong pre-reading activities can make all the difference in ensuring that students get as much as possible out of a book. This lesson offers pre-reading activities that will help your students enjoy and learn from Roald Dahl's 'The BFG.'

Pre-Reading Matters

Are you about to embark on a reading of Roald Dahl's The BFG with your students? If so, all of you are in for a real treat. Not only is the book funny and touching, it also hits on important themes like friendship, social responsibility, and the playfulness of language. However, the text is not an easy one for all students. One thing you can do to make sure your students get as much as possible out of this novel is to incorporate pre-reading activities. The activities in this lesson are designed to simultaneously activate and supplement your students' prior knowledge so that they are prepared to encounter Dahl's wonderful writing.

Visual Activities

These activities are great for the more visual learners among your students. These are students who benefit from seeing what they are learning. They might love to do art or benefit from seeing charts, graphic representations, and other images.

Envision a Giant

Students might or might not know that The BFG has to do with giants, but one thing is for certain: they will have some preconceived notions of giants in their minds. These might come from movies, fairy tales, or their imagination. Ask each student to create a sketch of what they picture when they hear the word 'giant.' Students can label their pictures with captions and should be prepared to explain the artistic choices they make. Then, give students a chance to share and compare and contrast their work. They can return to these sketches after reading in order to see what has or has not changed about their image of a typical giant.
