In this lesson you will get to hear about the ending of a classic novel, ''Because of Winn Dixie'' by Kate DiCamillo. The main character, India Opal, plans a party for her new friends while the excitement reaches its climax and draws to a close.

Characters

By the end of the novel, Kate DiCamillo has developed a cast of unique characters who will all play a role in the climax (the most exciting part of the story) and resolution (how the author wraps everything up). The main characters are India Opal Buloni, and her adopted dog, Winn-Dixie. The two have spent the summer getting to know her new town of Naomi, Florida--India has just moved there with her father, 'the preacher'. Winn-Dixie is the type of dog that everyone loves--he is full of personality and charm!

As they wander about Naomi, they befriend the librarian, Miss Franny Block, and an old woman (who might be a witch) named Gloria Dump. India and Winn-Dixie get a job at the pet store, where they listen its manager, Otis, play the guitar. Finally, India begins to make friends with some of the kids in town, including Sweetie Pie, the mischievous Dunlap brothers, and Amanda Wilkinson.

Climax

Throughout the story, India Opal is building new friendships and coming to terms with missing her mother, who abandoned her and her dad when she was just three years old. Each friendship seems to grow from another, and finally, India decides that she should throw a party to bring all of her new friends together! On a warm summer evening, they all meet at Gloria Dump's home to eat and listen to music. The mixed-up cast of characters is having a great time getting to know one another. Everything is going smoothly until a storm rolls in, and loud crashes of thunder send Winn-Dixie running away!

In the middle of the rainstorm, India and the preacher go out searching and calling for their beloved dog. They walk up and down the streets of Naomi calling his name, but he is nowhere to be found. Eventually, the preacher suggests they should head back to Gloria's home. India Opal finally realizes that the preacher loves Winn-Dixie just as much as she does.
