The Freedom Writers Diary Activities

Instructor: Anthony Cognata

Anthony has taught multiple grade levels in middle school, coached across contents, and has a master's degree in Educational Leadership.

You can do following activities with students prior to, during, and after reading 'The Freedom Writers Diary.' These activities will help students comprehend and make connections to the book.

The Freedom Writers Diary

The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell is an impactful story of the lengths students can and will go when involved in a community. As the story is about the work of a teacher and her teenage students, your students will be able to make real-life connections and empathize with the teens involved in the book. This connection allows students to grapple with their own circumstances and their abilities to overcome obstacles and difficulties--and to make meaningful changes within the world.

The following activities are meant to help you teach students about The Freedom Writers Diary with a class of upper middle school students. Use these activities in conjunction with a unit on the book and/or movie.
