In the nineteenth chapter of ''The Giver,'' by Lois Lowry, Jonas is given the opportunity to watch his father perform the release ceremony. In this lesson, we will learn more about chapter nineteen.

Identical Twins

In the nineteenth chapter of The Giver',' by Lois Lowry, Jonas asks his mentor, the Giver, about release. Jonas's father, a Nurturer in the Nurturing Center, will be releasing an identical twin today. Jonas has no idea that his new position of Receiver of Memories includes the privilege of seeing all private ceremonies. The Receiver of Memories is the person in the community that holds all of the community's memories in case they are needed to make important decisions. In this lesson, we will summarize the nineteenth chapter, in which Jonas observes a release.

The community cannot have two people who look the same.

Wishing He Could Watch

When Jonas mentions to the Giver that his father will be releasing a twin, he is surprised at the Giver's reaction. Jonas thinks releasing one twin is a good thing because it would be ridiculous to have two people who looked the same in the community. Jonas half-heartedly mentions that he wishes he could watch the release. The Giver surprises him not only by telling Jonas that he has access to watch, but actually pushes him to watch the ceremony as part of his training.

  • ''Jonas, when you and I have finished our time together, you will be the new Receiver. You can read the books; you'll have the memories. You have access to everything. It's part of your training. If you want to watch a release, you have simply to ask.'' (Giver)

Video from the Hall of Closed Records

With the click of a button, the Giver orders a video of the release of the twin from that morning. Instantly, the video appears on a screen in the room. Jonas is surprised that the release is in an ordinary room. He expected a ceremony to take place in a big auditorium. Jonas's father and his apprentice walk into the room carrying the two male babies. The babies are weighed and it is determined that one weighs 2 ounces more than the other. The heavier infant is wrapped and handed to his assistant to be taken to the Center.

  • ''Now he cleans him up and makes him comfy,'' Jonas told the Giver. ''He told me.'' ''Be quiet, Jonas,'' The Giver commanded in a strange voice. ''Watch.''

The Infant's Release

Jonas is shocked to see his father plunge a needle into the soft spot on the baby's head.

  • His father was talking, and Jonas realized that he was hearing the answer to the question he had started to ask. Still in the special voice, his father was saying, ''I know, I know. It hurts, little guy. But I have to use a vein, and the veins in your arms are still too teeny-weeny.''

The child jerked before going still. The memory of the boy dying on the battlefield came back to Jonas. After his father cleaned the room, he placed the baby in a carton and sent it down what looked like a trash chute.
