The Graveyard Book Lesson Plan

Students will enjoy this lesson plan as it explores life and death in The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. After students have read the book, they will read a lesson, answer discussion questions, complete an activity and take a quiz.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • analyze the characters in the storyline
  • draw inferences based on the characters' actions and communications
  • define and identify the plot of the story

Instructions

  • Prior to implementing this lesson plan, students should have read The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.
  • Begin by asking students to discuss what they liked most about this book.
  • Explain that this lesson reviews a summary of the book and its characters.
  • Distribute a copy of The Graveyard Book: Summary & Characters lesson and ask students to read independently. Shoulder pair students, then start the following discussion:
    • Which character do you like the most? Why?
    • Which character do you dislike? Explain.
    • Which brotherhood was the man Jack a member of?
    • Describe Bod's life in the graveyard.
    • What superpowers did Bod possess?
    • Was Bod happy he had superpowers? Explain.
    • Did Bod like Mr. and Mrs. Owens?
    • Do you think Mr. and Mrs. Owens took good care of Bod? Why or why not?
    • Describe Silas' role in the book. What did he do for Bod?
    • Did the living like seeing the Lady on the Grey? Explain.
    • What did Scarlett witness between Bod and the man Jack?
    • Based on the question above, why did Silas make Scarlett forget what she witnessed between the two?
    • How did Miss Lupescu care for Bod? What eventually happened to her?
    • Define the literary term 'plot.'
    • Explain the plot of the story.
  • Next show the lesson quiz and require students to complete independently, then review the answers.
