In the Hate U Give, you follow Starr Carters after she witnesses violence. These discussion questions are designed to be used as you read the novel. Since the novel addresses' sensitive topics, it might be best for older readers.

Chapter 1-2

  • What event does Starr witness that is at the core of this novel? What talk did Starr's parents have with her about situations like this prior to it happening?
  • What does T.H.U.G.L.I.F.E. mean?

Chapter 3-6

  • Describe Starr's reaction after the event? What things were happening around her?
  • Describe the Garden Heights neighborhood. Is there a neighborhood in your area or state that could be similarly described?
  • What is Starr's Dad Big Mav's role in the neighborhood? What is different about his past?
  • Describe Starr's school, Williamson. Do you know of any schools like that in your area?
  • What are the various reactions from people in Starr's life to the shooting? How do those reactions mirror the reactions of American society when police shootings occur?

Chapters 7-10

  • Why does Starr's mom Lisa not want her to be identified as the witness?
  • What is the difference in Big Mav and Uncle Carlos' perspectives on the shooting and aftermath? How do these reactions reflect the division in modern cultural discussions about police shootings?
  • How is Starr being pulled in various directions? Explain each.
