What is the important thing about rain? How about a shoe? In this lesson plan, students will read ~'~'The Important Book~'~' by Margaret Wise Brown and create an Important Book of their own.

Learning Objectives

By the conclusion of this lesson, students will:

  • Create a class book

Curriculum Standards


Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.


Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.


Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.


  • Copy of ''The Important Book''
  • A leaf or a flower to use as a visual aid
  • Construction paper (various lighter colors that can be colored on)
  • Markers and/or colored pencils
