The Kitchen Knight Lesson Plan

This lesson plan uses 'The Kitchen Knight' by Margaret Hodges to teach about characters, including identifying key characteristics, comparing and contrasting characters, and identifying how story events contribute to character growth.

Lesson Objectives

As a result of this lesson, the students will be able to:

  • identify key characteristics for each of the main characters in The Kitchen Knight.
  • explain how an event in the story contributes to an understanding of the story's main character, Gareth.
  • compare and contrast two characters in the story.

Materials

  • The Kitchen Knight: A Tale of King Arthur by Margaret Hodges
  • Copies of the Summary of the Kitchen Knight by Margaret Hodges: Lesson for Kids
  • Copies of the worksheet
  • A sample of a character list such as is often found at the beginning of plays and some novels, listing the names of each character and some relevant details. (Check online, use a playbill from something you've seen, grab an Agatha Christie novel from the library, or write your own!)

Instruction and Activities

  • Prior to this lesson, students should have read the book The Kitchen Knight: A Tale of King Arthur by Margaret Hodges using whatever format is best for your class.
  • To begin the lesson, distribute copies of the Summary of the Kitchen Knight by Margaret Hodges: Lesson for Kids. Have students read through it in small groups or pairs to refresh their memories about the key points of the story.
  • Give groups/pairs the worksheet to further check their understanding.

Cast of Characters

  • Show the class a list of characters from the beginning of a play. Read the descriptions and note the kind of information that is given about each character. (i.e. Sarah Beth: teenage skateboarder and lover of horses, Sarah Beth's greatest ambition is to ride in a rodeo. Sarah Beth is the sister of Martin and Keith.)
  • As a class, generate a list of the characters that appear in The Kitchen Knight.
  • In pairs, have students write character descriptions in the same style as a cast list from a play.

Character Map

  • Sir Gareth is the main character of The Kitchen Knight. Different events in a story reveal different aspects of his character. Students should create a story map listing key events from the story and what each event tells them about the character of Gareth. See image for a sample of a story map.

  • For example:
    • Gareth asks the king for three favors. - Gareth is brave to approach the king.
    • Kay sends Gareth to the kitchen to work. - Gareth is a hard worker.
  • This activity could work in two different ways.
