What is a Whangdoodle?

You are probably wondering, 'What in the world is a Whangdoodle?' The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews Edwards is about three siblings, Ben, Tom, and Lindy, who meet a professor with an interesting secret. Professor Savant not only believes in the Whangdoodle, but he also claims that he has visited Whangdoodleland.

Professor Savant

When Ben, Tom, and Lindy first get to know Professor Savant, it is because of a Halloween dare. However the three siblings soon start to visit with the professor and become friends. Professor Savant tells the children about an imaginary land named Whangdoodleland, which is where the last Whangdoodle in the world lives.

Professor Savant tells them that in the past the Whangdoodle and many other special creatures used to live in the world with humans. The Whangdoodle was very kind and wise. However, as people began to lose their imaginations, the Whangdoodle decided to create a special world where the creatures could live in peace. The Whangdoodle is the ruler of that world, and the creatures that live there are now considered to be imaginary creatures. Eventually, people living in the real world forgot all about the Whangdoodle and his friends.

The Children Visit Whangdoodleland

Professor Savant takes the children to Whangdoodleland with him on his search for the great Whangdoodle. However, there are some creatures in the imaginary world that do not want anyone to find the Whangdoodle, and they set up traps so that the group cannot get to him. Along the way, Professor Savant, Ben, Tom, and Lindy have to use their imagination, determination, and brains to get through the traps set for them.

The Last Whangdoodle

Finally, the four are able to find the last Whangdoodle! But the Whangdoodle is lonely, and he wishes he had a female Whangdoodle to keep him company and help him rule. Professor Savant finds a way to grant his wish and create a female Whangdoodle. Professor Savant, Ben, Tom, and Lindy eventually have to leave Whangdoodleland, but they know that they will always remember it.

Are you still wondering what exactly is a Whangdoodle? And how did the professor create a new one? You just might have to read the book to find out!
