The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief is a book for young adults written by author Rick Riordan. It is based on Greek myths, which are stories or legends from Greek culture. It's the first book in a series of books called Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It was written in 2005 and made into a movie in 2010. Let's learn what this story is all about.

Plot Summary

The plot of a book is a fancy way of saying what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. In The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson is our protagonist, or main character. He has lots of issues in school because he has a hard time reading and focusing on his schoolwork, and he's been kicked out of five schools already. When the story starts, he attends a school for troubled boys in New York.

On a field trip one day, Percy stands up for his friend who is getting bullied and gets in trouble with his math teacher. During their argument, his math teacher turns into a Fury, or goddess of vengeance, and Percy kills her with a pen that has turned into a sword. When they return to school, nobody remembers the teacher.

After school lets out for the summer, Percy and his mother are at the beach. A storm goes through town, and Percy's friend Grover encourages Percy and his mother to leave the house. During the storm, they are attacked by a Minotaur, or Greek monster, and Percy's mother, Sally, disappears. Percy kills the Minotaur and falls asleep.
