Would you be scared traveling in a strange, cold land? Chapters 9 and 10 of 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe', by C.S. Lewis, follow Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy on their journeys in Narnia. This lesson summarizes chapters 9 and 10.

Chapter 9 - In the Witch's House

Chapter 9 of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, written by C.S. Lewis, begins with Edmund's sneaky escape from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver. Edmund had been thinking of the Witch and her enchanted, delicious Turkish Delights during the entire dinner with the Beavers. Feeling frightened by the mention of Aslan, Edmund decides he will find the Witch instead. Deep down he knows she is evil, but Edmund is greedy and the thought of being made a prince, having all the treats he could want, and being in control of Peter entices him to leave.

Edmund quietly leaves the dam and begins his cold, dark journey to the home of the Witch. The Witch's home is more like a quiet ice castle. Edmund walks to the courtyard and is stopped by a scary lion that about to attack. Edmund realizes the lion is actually a statue. He laughs and teases the big stone lion, thinking it is probably Aslan.

Edmund passes many statues on the way to meet the Witch. The Witch is angry with Edmund for not bringing his brother and sisters with him. She becomes very scary and she seems like she may harm Edmund. Edmund quickly tells her all the plans of his siblings and Aslan's return in hopes she may be nicer or give him some Turkish Delights. The Witch refuses to give Edmund anything but at the mention of Aslan she immediately asks to have her sledge, or sled, ready to travel to the Beavers' home.

Chapter 10 - The Spell Begins to Break

As soon as Peter, Susan, Lucy, and the Beavers realize Edmund has left to share their secrets with the Witch, they make plans to leave the dam right away. After packing their bags, the group leaves the Beavers' home to find Aslan.

It is very cold outside, and Lucy, being the littlest, struggles to keep up in the snow storm. Mr. Beaver realizes they can't go on in the cold and finds a secret tiny cave. With just enough room for the five of them, they snuggle in and fall asleep quickly. The next morning, everyone is woken up by a strange jingling sound. Being afraid it could be the Witch, Mr. Beaver sneaks out to check where the sound is coming from. Everyone is excited to find out that it isn't the Witch - it is Father Christmas!
