If your students are reading ~'The Metamorphosis~' by Franz Kafka, having a set of strong discussion questions on hand can make all the difference. This lesson offers questions that focus on Part One.

Teaching The Metamorphosis

Kafka's The Metamorphosis is not an easy text to teach, but it is an exciting one that can really get students interested in some major literary and philosophical themes. This book tells the story of Gregor Samsa's transformation from young man to dung beetle, and it outlines the existential questions and crises that he and his family undergo as a result.

To scaffold your students' understanding of the text, you probably want to make sure to leave plenty of time for class discussions. When students discuss literature together, they are able to learn from each other and work collaboratively to understand knotty themes and questions. The questions in this lesson do not have definitive answers, but they leave plenty of space for students to converse.

Questions About Characters

Here, you will find questions about the characters we encounter in the opening section of the text.
