Reading Kafka's 'The Metamorphosis' can be a profound literary experience. This lesson helps you set up students for success with this complex work by offering pre-reading activities that prepare them for strong comprehension.

Why Do Pre-Reading Activities?

Are you about to take on Kafka's The Metamorphosis with your students? It is no small task you have ahead of you. This novel is complex in both form and content, and for many students, it will be their first encounter with such an existential read. One of the things you can do to make sure your students really get as much as possible out of the text is prepare them with pre-reading activities.

Pre-reading activities will activate students' prior knowledge about the themes and concepts in the novel, and will also supplement this knowledge so that students are prepared for the work that lies ahead.

Visual Activities

These pre-reading activities are well-suited to the visual learners in your class.

Draw a Metamorphosis

Prior to reading The Metamorphosis, many of your students will already have a preconceived notion of what a metamorphosis is and why it can be significant. Ask your students to draw a sketch of what comes to mind when they hear this term and have them label or caption their images.

Bring students together to share and discuss what they have drawn, and come to some conclusions or generalizations about their ideas about the concept of metamorphosis. You can revisit these ideas as you work through Kafka's text.
