The Outsiders Chapter 9 Questions

Before The Rumble

  • Why did the Greasers get dressed up for the rumble? Do you think Ponyboy should fight? Does he seem well? Darry has some apprehension about Ponyboy fighting; discuss his thoughts. Why do you believe Darry ultimately agreed to let Ponyboy fight?
  • Who taught the group how to use acrobatics? What reason did Ponyboy give for being proficient in acrobatics? Who went to jail because of it? Why?
  • What reasons did Steve, Darry, Soda, Two-Bit and Ponyboy give for fighting. In this scene, which members of the group seem to be followers rather than leaders? Be specific in your explanation.
  • Based on Ponyboy's explanation, why do the authorities always blame the Greasers for local crimes and mishaps? Explain the quote, ''People go by looks.''
  • Define fuzz in the context of this chapter. What did Darry suggest Ponyboy and Soda do if the fuzz showed up?

During The Rumble

  • What was the main difference between Tim Shepard's group and the group Ponyboy hung around?
  • At the rumble, how many Greasers were there versus the number of Socs?
  • What were the rules of the fight, and who stepped in start the rumble? Discuss how the two people who started the fight knew each other.
  • How does Ponyboy feel about the Socs at the beginning of the rumble? Use quotes to support your answer.
  • Dally was originally in the hospital then showed up at the rumble. How?
  • Who won the fight? What determined who won? Discuss the injuries of at least three Greasers. Do you believe they will heal from their wounds? Explain.
  • Where did Dally suggest he and Ponyboy go directly after the fight? Why?
