The Pigman by Paul Zindel

The Pigman, by Paul Zindel, is a novel written from the point of view of two teenagers, John Conlan and Lorraine Jensen. In the novel, John and Lorraine alternate narrating chapters that tell their version of the story surrounding their relationship with Angelo Pignati, an elderly gentleman they meet when attempting to play a prank on him. The novel shows the development and growth of these two as they learn about family, loyalty, and personal responsibility.

Chapter 10 included scenes showing the strengthening of the relationship between John, Lorraine, and Mr. Pignati. It ends, however, on a sad note with Mr. Pignati collapsing from an apparent heart attack.

Let's explore the events of chapter eleven in this novel.

Dealing With a Crisis

John narrates this chapter which begins with him taking charge and calling the ambulance to come pick up Mr. Pignati. He shows his ease with deception as he claims he and Lorraine are Pignati's children and easily answers questions from the police officers who also arrive. John makes some derogatory remarks about the policemen which angers Lorraine.

Lorraine proceeds to say that John is to blame for Mr. Pignati's heart attack, and he quickly responds by claiming she sounds like his mother. They end this minor argument by deciding to go have a beer at the cemetery.

Fake Children

John and Lorraine skip school the next day to go to the hospital to see Mr. Pignati. They are only allowed to visit him because they lie again and tell the hospital staff that they are Pignati's children. He seems to be doing much better, and he even offers to allow them to go to his house in case they want to hang out and eat chocolate-covered ants while he is in the hospital. Even though Lorraine refuses this offer, John instantly accepts.

Mr. Pignati asks John and Lorraine to visit the baboon, Bobo, while he is in the hospital.
