A library media specialist plays an important role in the education community. This lesson describes the roles and responsibilities of a library media specialist, and outlines qualifications and working conditions.

What Is a Library Media Specialist?

A centerpiece to most schools is the library, a place where students can checkout books, research topics, spend some quiet time reading, or explore other library media. At the core of the library is the library media specialist. Often referred to as the librarian, this professional wears many more hats than the 'checker-of-books'.

Library media specialists have many job responsibilities, including:

  • Understanding specific grade and subject level curricula
  • Collaborating with teachers to build curriculum
  • Creating learning experiences for students
  • Using technology and other tools to access information
  • Maintaining records of quality media materials
  • Ordering and supplying quality media materials
  • Instructing and leading students in locating information
  • Giving students and teachers materials necessary for learning
