Reading 'The Scorch Trials' with your middle or high school students can be a thrilling adventure. Use these discussion questions to help students analyze the characters, plot, and themes of this novel.

The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

The Scorch Trials is the second book in Dashner's Maze Runner series, and it is packed with just as much adventure as the first installment. Thomas and Teresa, along with other Gladers, find themselves facing another set of Trials which will test even their strongest relationships. To help your middle or high school students digest the material, use these discussion questions that cover characters and plot in the context of thematic elements, including perception, decisions, and friendship. Consider staging a whole-class discussion or providing a list of questions to student teams. Additionally, you may want to conduct a summative assessment utilizing a few of the questions that will garner thorough written responses.

Note: These discussion questions should be used after students have finished reading the novel.

Questions about Perception

  • How does Thomas react when he has to kill other people? Do you think these decisions are made against his will? Does he have any alternative choices? How would you have responded?
  • What makes the Gladers wonder if WICKED is good or bad? When do they discover the truth? Throughout the novel, what did you think about WICKED? How were your conclusions supported by novel events?
  • At the start of the novel, the Gladers encounter a disturbing event related to the Cranks. What do they think is happening? What is the reality of the situation? How does this new knowledge affect their decisions?
  • How is this book an example of dystopia? Provide specific examples.
  • Why does Chancellor Ava Paige decide that the memories of the Gladers should be restored? How do you think this fits with the plan?
  • Why doesn't Thomas believe Teresa when she claims that her actions were intended to save him rather than kill him?
  • How is Minho a good leader for the Gladers? Provide specific examples of her actions.
