Stimulating projects provide for an alternative means of assessment after finishing a novel unit. These project ideas are best for middle school students and should take 1-2 weeks for each to be completed.

The Sign of the Beaver

Once a class has finished reading a novel, most teachers choose to distribute an exam to assess the learning of their students. However, sometimes it is better to opt for more creative opportunities for students to showcase their knowledge. Your students will likely enjoy watching the unlikely friendship between Matt and Attean develop in The Sign of the Beaver. This story can lead to some very creative projects showcasing their understanding of the major story elements of the novel. Here are some innovative project ideas that focus on conflict, symbolism, setting, plot and characters.

Design Your Own Amusement Park Project

Goal: Students will display their knowledge of various aspects of setting in the novel.

Objective: Students will design and create an amusement park based on the locales seen in the novel.

Process: Students can work independently or in small groups for this project. They must plan their amusement park, design the layout, and incorporate aspects of the novel.

For this project students should create a poster of their amusement park. If computers are available, students could use digital design programs to create the amusement park virtually. Additionally, if building materials are available, they could make parts of their poster boards 3-dimensional. Whichever way works best for your class, be sure each park has the following:
