The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin explores love, friendship and vulnerability. By assigning these discussion questions, students will learn about how these themes impact the character's lives while exploring their beliefs.

Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the characters and scenes by answering these discussion questions.

Chapters 1 - 3

  • How would you describe Amelia's personality? Use three to five adjectives to describe her. If you were a character in the story, would you be Amelia's friend? Why or why not?
  • Discuss Amelia's relationship with A.J. Use their digital and face-to-face conversations to support your answer. Is A.J. an introvert or extrovert? Explain.
  • Define symbolism. Now describe the symbolism of A.J. leaving his door unlocked.
  • Describe how A.J. reacts when Maya arrives. Identify factors that may have influenced his reaction especially since he has a gruff demeanor.

Chapters 4 - 6

  • Explain why A.J. gives Maya the middle name of Tamerlane. Do you have a middle name? If so, explain why you were given the name. If not, what middle name would you choose for yourself, why?
  • Discuss why A.J. agrees to go on blind dates. Would you go on a blind date? Why or why not?
  • What is the importance of Maya knowing that A.J. has feelings for Amelia before he confirms those feelings internally?
  • Who is Leon Friedman and why does Amelia keep his identity hidden? Do you believe her actions are justified? Explain.
  • How does A.J.'s proposal fit his and Amelia's personality? Discuss how you would propose to your significant other or how you would like your significant other to propose to you.

Chapters 7 - 9

  • Describe Ismay and Daniel's relationship. Do you think Daniel is being disrespectful by flirting with other women when Ismay is present? Why or why not?
  • Discuss why A.J. is proud of Maya. Why does he shake her hand after the contest? How does this make her feel? How would you have felt if you were Maya?
  • Who is John? Explain the significance of John and Maya's interaction.
  • Discuss the most important theme throughout these chapters. Identify its relevance using specific scenes or quotes from the storyline.
