The Story of Keesh

Jack London's 'The Story of Keesh' is a short story about a young boy whose family is treated poorly by the council of his polar village after the death of his father. As a child too young to hunt and a single mother, they are thought to have less to contribute to the tribe than others. Keesh decides to go off on his own and proves to be successful. The other men are impressed when they realize how he outsmarts the bears he hunts and elevates him to become head of his tribe. The following questions outline topics for discussion with secondary students about this story.
