The Time Machine

Imagine what the world will be like in 800,000 years. What things will be better? What things will remain the same? What things will go wrong? In The Time Machine by H.G. Wells, the author explores class division from the perspective of a time traveler. The questions in this asset will guide classroom discussions about this novel.

Chapters 1-4

This section contains questions that provide context to time travel and first impressions of the future.

  • The Time Traveller contends that time is a dimension. Explain how time is like the other dimensions. Do you agree with the Time Traveller? Why?
  • The dinner guests discuss the things they would do if they could travel through time. If you could travel through time, would you? Why? If you could only do one thing, what would you do?
  • The dinner guests are skeptical of the Time Traveller's claims that he owns a time machine. Would you believe him? Why? What would it take to convince you that time travel is possible?
  • The Time Traveller's first impression of the people of the future is that they are weak, lazy, and stupid. Based on the changes in human behavior over the past few decades, choose 3 adjectives that describe the people of the future if humanity continues in the same direction.

Chapters 5-8

The questions in this section help students understand the Time Traveller's interactions with the people of the future and the assumptions he makes about them.
