The Writing Process Lesson for Kids

In this lesson, you will learn some helpful ways to use the writing process. This process can make writing easier for you. It can also improve the quality of what you write.

Writing, Writing, Everywhere!

Everywhere you look there is writing. Words fill our books, white boards, screens, street signs, and more. It's hard to get away from the written word.

I bet you do your own share of writing every day, too. You write your name on tests at school. You make lists of things you need to remember. You send text messages to your friends. These kinds of writing do not take much planning.

Now suppose your teacher assigns you a report on one of the planets...or a short story about animals...or even a paragraph about summer vacation. You have to think a little bit more before writing these kinds of things.

People who do a lot of writing find that the writing process is helpful with the more difficult writing tasks.

The Writing Process

The writing process is a set of steps that writers use to help them plan, organize, and complete writing assignments. You can find different ways of describing these steps, but most writers believe that five steps must be taken.

1. PREWRITING is the first step in this process. Prewriting is what you do before you actually begin writing. You figure out what you want to include in your writing. There are many different ways to do this. Here are a few of them:

  • Make a list.
  • Just start writing anything that you think of about your subject. You might even get other people to help you.
  • Make an outline.
  • Draw and label a picture about your subject.

2. DRAFTING (also called WRITING) is the next step. This is when you take your ideas from the prewriting stage and put them in the form you need them to be in. Of course, this depends on the assignment. It could be a story, a report, a paragraph, or any of the many other forms of writing.

3. REVISING is when you read over what you have written and ask yourself a few questions like these:

  • Did I leave anything out?
  • Does this make sense?
  • Is my information correct?
