Ray Bradbury's short story 'There Will Come Soft Rains' is one that students often find engaging. Take advantage of this high interest read by using the comprehension and discussion questions in this lesson to get your students thinking deeply about the text.

''There Will Come Soft Rains''

Ray Bradbury's story of an automated house that's winding down was first published in a magazine, and within a year it appeared as part of his book The Martian Chronicles. The questions below fall into two categories: the first group, Comprehension Questions, are focused on recalling the facts of the text, such as the characters, setting, and plot, and the second group, Discussion Questions, are higher order questions designed to push the thinking of your students and to get them talking. Many of these questions do not have a definite right answer, rather students are asked to theorize and support their ideas with evidence from the story.

Comprehension Questions

  • What are some examples of some of the activities the house performed for the family that lived there?
  • What happened to the family that lived in the house? What do the silhouettes on the wall suggest was the fate of the family?
  • What event starts the chain reaction that results in the destruction of the house?
  • How is the house ultimately destroyed?
  • Describe the dog. What is the cause of its poor condition?
  • Describe the city around the house.
  • What actions does the house take in an effort to save itself?
  • The title of the story is a literary reference. What does the title refer to?
