Instructor: Matthew Hamel

Matt has degrees in Journalism and Business and has taught a variety of courses at high schools and universities around the world.

Thomas Jefferson is a towering figure in American history and was renowned for his many intellectual abilities. In this lesson, students are encouraged to delve a little deeper into Jefferson's accomplishments through educational and informative classroom activities.

The Amazing Jefferson

The many skills and abilities of Thomas Jefferson have been well-documented. In fact, it may be faster to list the things he wasn't able to do than to go through a list of his accomplishments. These activities focus on a few of the lesser-known aspects of Jefferson's life and abilities. However, it is still advisable that you use these activities after students have already learned about Jefferson and his historical importance.

Jefferson's Wheel

Because of the many prominent government positions he held during the course of his life, Jefferson's correspondence was always in danger of falling into enemy hands. Sometimes his mail would be opened before he even received it. Because of this, Jefferson created a device called a wheel cipher that could encode and decode letters so that only he and the people he wanted to communicate with could understand the messages he wrote and received. For this activity, students will create their own ways to encode and decode messages.
