Instructor: Clio Stearns

Thomas Jefferson is one of the major important figures in early United States history. This lesson gives you some ideas about how to bring his life and works alive for your students.

Why Thomas Jefferson Projects?

Have you ever worried that when you teach your children about historical figures, the learning that they take away is somewhat dry and dull? One way to address this problem is by incorporating more projects into your instruction. Projects can be especially memorable because they make use of a variety of learning styles and modalities. They are often interdisciplinary in nature, and students grow especially focused on them if they work on projects over time. Projects also often lend themselves well to collaborative work.

The projects in this lesson are designed to help your students learn about Thomas Jefferson. A man who was a Founding Father and a US President, Jefferson is an important figure for students of early American history to learn more about. These projects will help make his life and works seem engaging and interesting to students.

Jeffersonian Quotes

Jefferson was a prolific writer and thinker, who had ideas about a wide variety of topics. Ask your students to spend some time reading different quotes that he wrote and said. Then, dedicate a wall or bulletin board in your classroom to becoming the wall of Jefferson quotes. Each student should write a Jefferson quote on a piece of paper, and then should either draw an illustration interpreting the quote and its meaning, or write a paragraph describing what the quote means.
