Are you reading 'To Kill a Mockingbird' with your students? These questions will enhance understanding of chapter 2 and can be used with one-on-one, with teams, or as a whole group discussion.

The Narrator, Jem and Miss Caroline

  • Jem and the narrator recently started school, what are their grade levels? Use quotes from the chapter to support your answer.
  • The narrator mentions a significant difference between her relationship with her brother at home and at school. Describe the difference as explained by the narrator. Is this common in real life? Do you think this is a healthy way to engage with a sibling? Is it a natural thing to have different relationships based on the setting? Explain thoroughly.
  • Is the narrator's reading ability above or below average for her grade level? What information in the book supports your answer? Who taught the narrator how to read? Does the narrator believe her reading level is a positive or negative? Be specific in your discussion.
  • Who is Miss Caroline? Why does she have such a disdain with the narrator's ability to read? Does she treat the narrator differently? What does she tell the narrator to do in regards to reading? Be specific and give at least 2 quotes to support your answer.
  • Explain Miss Caroline's interaction with two other students in this chapter. Discuss each separately. Do you think she thoroughly understands the community? What should she had done before school started to increase cohesiveness?

Education, Medicine and Law

  • Two conceptual thoughts of education existed between Miss Caroline and Calpurnia, explain each. Who do you think has the most appropriate approach to educating the narrator? Why? State at least three reasons.
  • Who is Dr. Reynolds? What unusual form of payment do Dr. Reynolds and Atticus accept? Explain and quote the phrase to support your answer. What overall impression do you have of both them from your answer?
  • What is your overall perception of Miss Caroline's learning environment? Do you believe Miss Blount, who was born and raised in Maycomb County, agrees with Miss Caroline's teaching strategies? Why or why not? Use specific quotes to justify your answer.
