To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter 6 Questions

Students will enhance their literary analysis skills by answering the Chapter 6 discussion questions below. You'll also activate a higher level of learning by requiring students to complete the extension questions.

The Kids and the Radley House

  • Describe Scout and Dill's relationship in this chapter. Is the relationship as it seems, or is there an underlining meaning? Does Scout like Dill more, or does Dill like Scout more? Use specific quotes from the chapter to support your answer.
  • What did Dill and Jem plan in Chapter 6? Why did they choose the last day of summer for this activity? Were they successful? Explain.
  • In this chapter, a shotgun sounded. Who shot the gun? What reason did they give for shooting the gun? Who did the shooter think they were shooting at?
  • After the gunshot sounded, where did Dill, Jem, and Scout run to? Why did they run to this location? Explain in detail.
  • What reason did Dill give for the three of them missing for quite some time?
  • Jem went to the Radley's house a second time; explain what he retrieved. Describe his thought process for returning. Did Scout accompany him? Give specific reasons why she did or did not return with him.

Setting and Theme Questions

  • Explain this comment: 'Matches were dangerous, but cards were fatal' in context of this chapter. Who made this comment and for what reason?
  • Define racism. List each character who appears racist in Chapter 6. Use specific quotes to support your answer.
  • Who said, '…next time he won't aim so high…..' What did he/she mean by this comment? Which out of the three kids (Jem, Dill or Scout) was mentioned in this statement?
