Overview of To Kill a Mockingbird

Scout and Jem Finch live with their father who is a lawyer, Atticus Finch, in the town of Maycomb Alabama. When they aren't in school, Scout and Jem spend their time with neighbor's nephew, Dill. The three are obsessed with the seeing another neighbor, Boo Radley. Chapter six begins on Dill's last night at Miss Rachel's house before leaving for school.

Summary of Chapter 6

Scout, Jem and Dill are enjoying one last summer night before Dill has to leave. Although they were ordered by Atticus to stay away from Boo Radley and his house, Jem and Dill come up with a plan to go over to Boo Radley's house to see if they can catch a glimpse of him. Scout doesn't like the idea one bit, but Jem teases her by calling her a girl, and Scout will have none of that. She joins them, and they begin to walk over to the Radley house.

They walk over to the back of the house where they squeeze under a wire fence. Once in the garden, they make their way to the squeaky gate to the backyard. Once in the backyard they carefully walk over to the back of the house where Jem and Scout lift Dill up to a window sill. He can't see anything so they make their way over to a window on the back porch.

Scout is nervous about getting caught, and the noise they are making doesn't help. Stairs creak as they make their way to the porch window. While Dill is peering through the window, Scout sees the shadow of a man coming towards them. Dill and Jem see the shadow as well and the three jump off the porch and make their way quickly back to the garden and under the fence. While running, a shotgun is fired into the air. Once they are out of the garden, Dill and Scout turn around and see Jem stuck in the wire. He wriggles out of his pants and runs as fast as he can to catch up with the other two.

The three make their way back to their front yard and try to act as if everything is normal. They look down the street and see a crowd gathering at the Radley place. it would look suspicious if they were not there, so they walk down to gather with the crowd. When they get there, Mr. Nathan Radley is holding a gun telling the crowd that there was a black man in his garden. He asks everyone to keep an eye out.
