Confirm student understanding of Chapter 9 by requiring them to respond to the following discussion questions. Further expand their application of the themes in the chapter with the extension questions.

Finch's Landing

  • Uncle Jack said to Scout she was growing out of her pants a little. What had Scout done to prompt Uncle Jack's comments? When did Uncle Jack say Scout's actions would be appropriate?
  • What did Aunt Alexandra think about Scout? What did she do to hurt Scout's feelings? How did Atticus tell her to handle the situation?
  • How does Atticus's family at Finch's Landing feel about his child rearing and defense of Tom Robinson? Be specific; give at least one quote for each.
  • What happened right before Atticus, Jem, Scout and Uncle Jack left Finch's Landing? At this point in the book, where is the only setting where no racism exists?

Setting and Theme Questions

  • Where is the setting at the beginning of Chapter 9? What major holiday is taking place? How did Scout and Jem feel about the holiday? Explain in detail.
  • What does Maycomb County think about Atticus' defense of Tom Robinson? Discuss how his decision has affected his children, Scout and Jem, at home and at school.
  • What is the overall theme of Chapter 9? Define climax. Based on the definition, what is the climax of this chapter?
