Tropical Rainforest Biome Project Ideas

Instructor: Christopher Muscato

Chris has a master's degree in history and teaches at the University of Northern Colorado.

Tropical rainforests are incredible habitats. These projects can help your students study biodiversity, types of tropical rainforests, and the impacts of pollution on the world.

The Tropical Rainforest Biome

Tropical rainforests have some of the greatest ecological diversity in the world, making them complex and fascinating ecosystems. They are home to thousands of species of plants and animals and are critical in maintaining the overall health of the planet. As a result, there is something for students of every grade level to learn about the composition and importance of the tropical rainforest. The following projects will help you introduce this topic into your classroom in several ways, and can be adapted to fit your needs.

Mapping the Forest Levels

Materials: posterboard, markers, colored pencils, computer/printer access, glue

For this project, students will map out the four principle levels of the rainforest (emergent, canopy, understory, floor). Each student will be assigned an actual tropical rainforest in the world that they will research. Students will then create a poster that shows the forest and includes several plants and animals in each level. Students can draw their rainforest, or print/cut/glue images to a poster board. They will also prepare a report about the plants and animals they've researched, and how this specific ecosystem maintains balance.
