One of the biggest trends in fiction over the last few years has been mythological creatures. Fairies, werewolves, and especially vampires have been popping up everywhere from youth to adult fiction. One of these series, the Southern Vampire Mysteries series, features a telepathic barmaid that falls in love with two vampires, along with a werewolf, and a shape shifter who frequently takes the form of a dog. The characters in the Southern Vampire Mystery series have been a hit, both in the books and on the television series called True Blood, which is based on the books.

The author, Charlaine Harris, was born in Mississippi. She lives in Arkansas with her husband. She has been writing mystery novels for years, such as the Lily Bard (Shakespeare) Mysteries, and the Harper Connolly Telepathy Mysteries. She is best known for the Southern Vampire Mysteries series, and she has not always liked the direction it has taken on screen. She faced controversy in 2013 when the final novel of the series was released, because a great deal of the readers of the series were displeased with the final ending for the heroine, Sookie Stackhouse.

There are 13 books in the series. The first, Dead After Dark, was published in May 2001. It won an Anthony Award the same year. Harris was originally only going to write ten books in the series, but contracted for three more during the run of the series. The stories follow Sookie Stackhouse, who lives in Bon Temps, Louisiana, and works at the local bar called Merlotte's. When she meets a vampire, Bill Compton, for the first time, she is amazed because she is telepathic, but she cannot hear his thoughts. She saves him from people who want to drain him of his blood and sell it, and they begin a relationship. This drags Sookie into a world of supernatural creatures. She learns about her own family and why she is telepathic as the novels continue. She is put into danger on a regular basis and has to save herself and her friends and family frequently. She dates Bill until she finds out that he was sent by the vampire queen of Louisiana to learn about her. She also dates the powerful vampire, Eric, and several shape shifting creatures. She ends up with Sam, her boss and a shapeshifter himself.
