Expecting Company

Imagine how it would feel to see your sons for the first time in ten years. Mae and Angus Tuck, who live in an isolated place on the edge of town, are about to receive company from their favorite visitors. Let's learn more about the Tuck family from Chapter Two of Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt.

The Tucks live in a cottage near a wood.

Waking Up

Mae Tuck, the mother of the Tuck family, wakes up her husband, Angus Tuck, excitedly. Their boys will be coming home tomorrow for a visit. Angus Tuck, who is a grouchy fellow that only smiles in his sleep, is irritated that Mae woke him up from his favorite dream. 'I was having that dream again, the good one where we're all in heaven and never heard of Treegap,' said Tuck. Treegap is the town, but at this point, the reader does not yet know what Treegap is or why Tuck is so unhappy. Mae dismisses him and tells him that there is no point in wishing for something that isn't going to happen and that he just needs to get used to things.

Heading to Town

Mae decides she is going to go to town to meet the boys. Tuck doesn't think it is a good idea because someone might recognize her. Mae doesn't think she has anything to worry about because she has not been to town in ten years and does not expect that anyone there remembers her. She worries herself over whether or not Tuck will be okay all by himself, but he reassures her by asking, 'What in the world could possibly happen to me?'
