Who is the Good Guy?

Have you ever been in the situation where you misjudged who was right and who was wrong? When Winnie Foster meets the stranger in the yellow suit in Tuck Everlasting, he seems nice enough. He says he's just passing through in search of someone. While Winnie's first impression of the Tucks is good until they kidnap her, she begins to wonder if they are crazy when they tell her a tale of drinking from a spring that caused them to never grow older. However, Winnie is discovering that she misjudged both of them.

The stranger uses Winnie's location to manipulate her family into signing over the wood containing the spring to him. He intends to force the Tucks and Winnie to be a sideshow demonstration to help him sell the water to other people who want to live forever. When Mae Tuck, the mother of the family, hears the stranger's intention to hurt Winnie and take her against her will, Mae hits him with the butt of her rifle just as the constable arrives to witness it. Let's find out what happens next in chapter 20 of Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt.

Who Kidnapped Winnie?

Winnie clings to Tuck, the father of the family, while the constable inspects the unconscious man. 'He ain't dead. Leastways, not yet.' The constable is perplexed when Mae tells him the reason she hit the stranger is because he was trying to take Winnie against her will. After all, he came to the house to arrest the Tucks for kidnapping Winnie. Defending Mae, Winnie speaks out and says that she has not been kidnapped, but went to the Tucks' cottage because they are friends.

Mae is Arrested

The constable orders the Tucks to take the stranger inside and take care of him while the constable retrieves the doctor. Winnie notices the look of envy on Pa's face as he stares at the man. Pa wishes he could die, but he can't. The constable arrests Mae and loads Mae and Winnie onto his horse to take them back to town. He informs the rest of the Tucks that they better make sure the man lives because if he doesn't, Mae will be hanged for killing him.
