In chapter 24 of ''Tuck Everlasting'' by Natalie Babbitt, Winnie meets the Tuck family at the jail so they can help Mae escape. In this lesson, we will find out if they can get Mae out and get away before they are caught.

Winnie Decides to Help Mae

Mae Tuck, the mother of the Tuck family, was only trying to help ten-year-old Winnie Foster when she hit the stranger that attempted to take Winnie. When the stranger dies, Mae is arrested and will likely be hanged for murder. Winnie has grown to love the Tucks and can't let that happen. In chapter 24 of Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt, Winnie meets the Tucks at the jail at midnight to help Mae break free.

Winnie Sneaks out of her House

Have you ever tried to sneak out of your house without anyone noticing? Winnie is surprised about how easy it is to get out without waking anyone. Knowing this just made Winnie feel guiltier about betraying their trust. Jesse, the seventeen-year-old son of Mae that hopes to marry Winnie in the future is waiting for Winnie outside her house. The two are able to run hand in hand to the jail without being detected.

Miles Removes the Window from the Jailhouse

When they arrive, Miles, Jesse's brother, and Tuck, Jesse's father, are there waiting for them. Tuck and Winnie hug and Miles squeezes her hand before they proceed to the jailhouse window. A storm approaches from the distance as Winnie watches Miles skillfully using his carpentry skills to remove the frame from the barred window.

Miles halted his work and crouched when they heard the constable coming in the front door to check on his prisoner. Winnie hears the song in her head, again and again, 'Stone walls do not a prison make.' Miles waits until the thunder strikes and then pulls the window. It comes off on the second try. The sound of thunder muffled Jesse's giggles as the Tucks pull Mae out of the window and falls into a pile on top of them.

The Tucks Say Goodbye to Winnie

Winnie hugs and kisses each one of the Tucks as rain begins to fall. When Jesse embraces her, he says, 'Remember!' to remind Winnie to find him when she reaches 17 years old. Miles lifted Winnie to the window so that she could take Mae's place in case the constable checked his prisoner again. While Winnie waits for Miles to put back the window, the storm blows rain into her cell. From a distance, she hears Mae's music box. When Winnie looks out the window, the Tucks are gone.
