Tuck Everlasting Chapter 8 Summary

Instructor: Kerry Gray

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

In chapter eight of 'Tuck Everlasting' by Natalie Babbitt, Winnie is shocked by the things the Tucks have told her about the spring, but she no longer feels afraid.

New Friends

At this point in the story, Winnie Foster has wanted to run away from her overprotective family, but is too afraid. While exploring in the nearby wood, she meets the Tuck family. When Winnie tries to drink from the same spring that Jesse Tuck drank from, they kidnap her. At first, she is afraid, but she becomes less afraid when she finds out their secret. They have lived in isolation because the spring gave them eternal life eighty-seven years ago. Winnie's curiosity gets the better of her when they tell her that she needs to speak to the father of the Tuck family so she will understand why the spring has to remain a secret. She happily joins the Tuck family on the voyage to their home in chapter eight of Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt.

Should Winnie Trust Them?

Would you believe Jesse Tuck if he told you he is over a hundred years old? Winnie is not the type to believe in magic, but there is something about the Tuck family that makes Winnie trust them. She feels honored when Jesse Tuck says, '…you're the only person in the world, besides us, who knows about it!' Miles, Jesse's brother, reminds Jesse that just because they have not met anyone like them does not mean no one else exists.

Miles also warns that even though they have seen a lot of things during their time on Earth, there is more to it than adventure. 'That kind of talk'll make her want to rush back and drink a gallon of the stuff,' says Miles. Ma Tuck interrupts to tell Winnie that now that she knows their secret, Pa will want to meet her to make sure she can keep the secret. Ma hates that Winnie's mother will worry, but doesn't see any options.
