Understanding the Common Core

Instructor: Derek Hughes
The Common Core Standards are a set of standards that are becoming more prominent in education. This lesson will help you understand the Common Core so you can better teach according to the standards.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative

Whether you are just beginning your teaching career or are a veteran educator with many years of experience, an understanding of the Common Core Standards is required to keep students on track in their education. Before the Common Core Standards, it was difficult to know if a student in California and another in Texas, who both achieved As in reading, possessed similar skills.

The development of these standards began in 2009 with an objective of establishing a common set of educational guidelines that would be used in each state. Such a system would make it easier to see how and what our students are learning across the country.

Since 2009, standards have been developed to ensure that students would be ready to move on to college and eventually a career. They were written to outline what skills students should have mastered by the time they move onto the next grade level and are divided into two subject areas - English language arts/literacy and mathematics. Each area is then further divided into smaller subsections and grade levels.

This lesson will discuss the standards in terms of both subject area.

English Language Arts/Literacy

The Language Arts Common Core Standards are divided into several areas. These include foundational reading standards, standards for reading various texts (literature and informational), and standards for writing, speaking, listening, and language. Each of these subsections contain a set of standards for each grade level from kindergarten through 12th grade.
