Unplugged Coding Activities

Instructor: Maria Airth

Maria has a Doctorate of Education and over 20 years of experience teaching psychology and math related courses at the university level.

Students will practice concepts related to coding without the need for a computer. Utilizing collaborative activities, students will write and debug programs to strengthen their understanding of programming.

Why Unplugged Coding?

Do you have a computer for every student in your classroom? Probably, not. Computers are expensive pieces of equipment and most schools just cannot afford to supply an individual machine for every student.

Does that mean that learning coding skills is not important for students who don't have daily access to machines? Absolutely not. Learning to code is still important because technology is being incorporated into every aspect of our lives.

That is where unplugged coding comes in: this is the process of writing code without the need for an actual computer. It helps students practice the precise statements required when writing code and to use great attention to detail when reviewing code. Unplugged coding is a great foundational step before students begin working with computers.

The unplugged coding activities offered here are designed for all age levels; you will simply need to adjust the difficulty levels to suit your needs.
