U.S. Civil War Animal Mascots Lesson Plan

With this lesson plan, your students are going to learn about some of the animal mascots used by regiments in the US Civil War. Students will explore the roles of mascots in morale and recruitment.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Explain the roles of regimental mascots in the US Civil War
  • Identify some of the notable mascots of the US Civil War
  • Connect non-combat actions to soldiers' enjoyment of life during wartime
