Have you ever wondered how the water stays clean and eliminates germs from the large number of people swimming together? There is a chemical called chlorine that does this. Chlorine is a powerful gas with a potent odor that is strong enough to eliminate, or remove, a variety of germs that can be harmful to people.

How is Chlorine Used in a Swimming Pool?

Swimming pools have lots of people floating and swimming around in the same water together. Therefore, many swimming pools and water parks offer a shower to rinse off in before getting into the water. This is a safety measure to remove some of the germs on your body before you get into the pool. However, the shower cannot remove all of the germs.

So, scientists use chlorine as a disinfectant, or chemical to eliminate the remaining germs and stop infections that can get into the water. Scientists know the exact amount of chlorine that is required to add to the water to ensure that germs are eliminated effectively and to keep people safe.
