Visual Perception Occupational Therapy Activities

Instructor: Shanna Fox

Shanna has been part of the whirlwind world of teaching middle school for 20 years. She has a Master of Education degree in instructional design.

Using visual perception activities with your occupational therapy students can engage them in decoding images and words. These primary grade activities will help you provide students with opportunities to develop and apply visual perception skills.

Visual Perception Activities

Utilizing visual perception activities with your primary grade occupational therapy students can help you engage them in hands-on skill building. As their skills are developed, your consistent practice can help them transfer these skills in new and unique learning situations. In so doing, you can prepare your students for the application to letter recognition, spelling, and decoding necessary to read well. In addition, these activities provide you a way to incorporate visual perception practice with both images and words. It's essential that students be provided multiple methodologies for development, practice, and application of their visual perception skills.

Same and Different

This activity will enable you to work on visual discrimination and form constancy with your students. Prepare some items for sorting and matching, such as socks, shapes, or animal pictures. In the early stages, incorporate exact matches with little similarity between the pairs. As the student advances, add in some choices that are similar but not exactly alike. For example, if matching socks with beginning students, select a blue, orange, and purple pair for matching. For advanced practice, incorporate an orange stripe pair and a solid orange or a light purple and a darker purple. When using shapes, do the same. Begin with pairs of circles, triangles, and squares. Later, add in rectangle, oval, and diamond pairs.
