Learning Vocabulary with Games

Improving your vocabulary doesn't end with childhood. The English language has a vast number of words. Every sentence you utter can be said in many different ways, each with slightly different connotations. For this reason, expanding your vocabulary should continue throughout your life.

However, learning new words needn't be a chore. Let's take a look at some games you can play that will help you to improve your vocabulary while having fun at the same time.

Longest Anagram

This game is a competition between groups. Start by generating a set of 10 random letters. These can be picked out of a bag or selected using a random letter generator online. Then, each group competes with each other to generate the longest word they can from the 10 letters. In most cases, 10-letter words won't be possible, but very often seven or eight will be. To increase the odds of generating a useful set of letters, pick four vowels and six consonants.

One-Sentence Stories

To play this game, one group or person comes up with a list of three or four unusual words. Then, everyone else must come up with a one-sentence story that uses those words. The goal should be for it to make sense, but be as amusing or entertaining as possible. The players then vote on the best (but can't vote for their own). The person coming up with the words can rotate clockwise each time, and the person who wins the most rounds wins the game.
